HollandDoor organized a customised study programme for a one-week visit to the Netherlands at the request of the Ministry of Agriculture in Kazan. Kazan is the capital city of the Republic of Tatarstan, which is a country within the Russian Federation. The Kazan region is one of the most economically developed regions in Russia. The study programme was aimed at teaching the Kazan delegation about developments in various agricultural sectors in the Netherlands.

With financial support from EP-Nuffic, an organisation which supports the international cooperation of education, HollandDoor successfully provided a 2-week-training course about protected cultivation in Cu Chi (HCMC, Vietnam). This took place in October 2016 and March 2017. 20 Vietnamese experts participated in this training named ‘Enhancing the capabilities of Vietnamese key-trainers in protected cultivation in the south of Vietnam’. The participants came from several different knowledge-, research- and educational institutions as well as a number of local businesses. The focus of the training was about gaining knowledge and skills with regard to cultivation on substrate, applicable technology and with special attention towards crop prevention and protection (among other things biological pest control). Moreover, a lot of attention was given towards active training methods for the experts to pass along to their local green growers. This hands-on training was provided by HollandDoor’s experts Geerten van der Lugt and Jos Leeters, who were supported by trainers of Fresh Studio Vietnam and Wageningen University & Research. 

Nong Lam University in HCMC and the Agricultural High Tech Park in Cu Chi, HCMC were the most important partners and beneficiaries during this training project. Participants from both organisations experienced the training as being extremely beneficial. Due to the high satisfaction rate the Vietnamese involved with the training as well as Hollanddoor are looking for possibilities to continue this cooperation through follow-up trainings.

On Tuesday 17th November HollandDoor organized on behalf of the Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy Group of Wageningen University the pre-conference tour of the 7th International Conference on Coexistence between Genetically Modified (GM) and non-GM based Agricultural Supply Chains. This year the biennial international event took place in Amsterdam. The excursion program provides an excellent opportunity for the conference participants (many of whom are scientists and policy makers) to get information directly from the 'working floor'.  

Many of the agricultural supply chains concerns raw materials for feedstuff. Therefore the excursion program focused on that theme. In the morning the IGMA terminal in the Amsterdam harbor was visited. Here transshipment from sea ships to river ships and storage takes place of raw materials for Cefetra and Cargill. The participants received an extensive and expert explanation by Cefetra about of all the trade and logistic activities regarding GMO and non-GMO raw materials. Fitted with helmets and swimming vests the participants could take a closer look aboard of a harbor vessel of the unloading of a sea ship. With cranes with a maximum capacity of 40 tons at a time the unloading still takes up 3 days of work.

After this very informative visit the program went on after lunch with two presentations in the Harry Mulisch room of the Amsterdam Public Library which is also in the vicinity of the harbor. The presentations of RIKILT Wageningen UR and the Ministry of Economic Affairs enlightened the enforcement of GMO non-GMO segregation in the Netherlands. As well as discussing the Dutch position regarding the opt-out possibility for EU countries for GMO products, respectively.

After a lively discussion with the speakers it was time for a short walk to the VIP Water Taxi which brought the group, after a touristic trip through the Amsterdam canals, back to the conference hotel. And so HollandDoor succeeded in organizing an informative and full day program in an area of a few square kilometer.

In May 2015, HollandDoor organized on request of the Center for High-Tech Application and Development in Agriculture (HTES) in Hanoi, Vietnam, a tailor-made training on Export promotion for Vietnamese fruit and vegetables exporters. Because of this succesfull training, HTES requested HollandDoor to organize another tailor-made training in December. The training objective this time was to expose a group of Vietnamese trainees to the Dutch fruit and vegetable trade sector in order to learn about trends and developments related to packaging materials and methods. The trainees came all from the surrounding area of Thai Binh city, about 100 km south-east of Hanoi and were connected to the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance - Thai Binh.

The 2,5 day tailor-made training program contained lectures which were illustrated with field visits. The trainees were inspired and triggered to define possibilities for implementations in the Vietnamese agro sector to optimize the current fresh supply chains and to look for improved marketing performance.

Vietnam is also working on labor integration of mentally or physically disabled people in the Vietnamese agro sector. During the training some field visits were organized to illustrate how this is organized in The Netherlands.

The fruit and vegetables production and trade sector in Vietnam shows a fast development and has ample opportunities for international trade. But at the same time the sector lacks knowledge, expertise and infrastructure. HTES was established in
2005 to spearhead the adoption of advanced technology and management systems in agriculture, especially horticulture. The initiation of these courses is one of the initiatives of this organisation. 

The participants of the course were very happy with the given exposure and knowledge during this HollandDoor training and went home with lots of new plans.
