Training on poultry and pedagogical and didactical skills in Benin

From 24 to 28 October 2022 the second training on poultry was offered to the 20 teachers of four technical agricultural schools of Kika, Banikoara, Ina et Natitingou in Benin with the aim to offer them all the knowledge and skills they need to raise poultry for meat and eggs and to refresh their practical competences. The training was hosted by Societe Ferme Otolla in Cotonou and was conducted by mr. Emmanuel Ntiranyibagira (Rica Foundation), Mr. Cor Wijnands (Yuverta) and prof. Chistophe Chrysostome (University of Cotonou). The teachers were trained on modules about feed formulation, poultry signals, artificial insemination and constructing an incubator with local materials.

In the first module they learned about the feeding of poultry species. For the practical work a visit was organized to a feed mill near Cotonou, where they learned how to recognize the raw materials and how feed rations are compiled on a small scale and feed is made with simple tools.

The second module in the training was about poultry signals focused on laying hens. Watching and listening to the animals, and paying attention to their behavior as a group as well as their individual behavior. This provides much more information about animals’ health, well-being and production for poultry-keepers to use for improving economic results.  For the practical work we used the farm of Otolla in Cotonou.

The third module was about artificial insemination in poultry and was conducted by prof. Chysostomus of the University of Cotnou. After the theoretical introduction, practice was done in which in addition to catching sperm was also practiced in inseminating on Guinea Fowl.

The fourth module was about the artisanal production of incubators and incubation management.

In addition to the technical modules about poultry, extra attention was paid in the training  to provide competenc -based education in the TVET’s  as a way of teaching in which the students are more actively involved in the education process and where the students become more responsible for their own learning process. The teachers were taught how to grow more in a role as a coach of the learning process instead as a teacher.Organizing internships and supervising internships have also been discussed in detail during this training.

During the training we had many fierce discussions with the participants and the topics were well explored.

At the end of the training, the certificates were handed out with great satisfaction!
