Update on sustainable aquaculture and agribusiness vocational training in Indonesia

In September 2023 we started a new project in Indonesia in sustainable aquaculture and agribusiness, in collaboration with our Indonesian partners BBPPMPV Cianjur and IPB University Bogor, as well as our Dutch colleagues at Zone College and HAS Green Academy.

From September 2023 to January 2024, we participated in a series of online training sessions on value chain management and aquaculture. In addition, we attended a week-long training program in Indonesia from January 22 to January 26 2024.

During our Training Week in Indonesia, we conducted in-person training at BBPPMPV in Cianjur and IPB University in Bogor. Our discussions focused on applying value chain principles and incorporating them into relevant teaching materials for vocational high schools (SMKs). This included practical assignments and educational games. Our local partner, East-West Seed, Bina Tani Sejahtera, provided valuable insights on post-harvest management and value chains in Indonesia. Additionally, the ATP Park of IPB University Bogor emphasized its active role in the value chain and how it facilitates connections between farmers and markets. We also discussed food loss in depth and explored the implementation of value chain principles in greater detail.

In addition to our on-site training, we visited Yogya Supermarket and Kebun Akinini in Cianjur. The young entrepreneurs at Kebun Akinini impressed us with their farming, processing, distribution, and marketing methods, which promote a cooperative, healthy, and sustainable approach. We also enjoyed a delicious and healthy lunch at Akinini’s farm. This experience was undoubtedly enriching and worthwhile!

This program will continue in the coming months and will include a range of online training sessions. An internship in Indonesia for three students from HAS Green Academy will also support the program. Next week, aquaculture RAS systems will be shipped to BBPPMP for educational purposes too, and members of BBPPMPV and IPB will visit the Netherlands in March. Coaches and students from Zone College will provide training on location.

This program is made possible by Nuffic Global Development. Please stay tuned for further updates in the coming months.
