In March 2023, HollandDoor launched a TMT project funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, entitled: "Strengthening, updating and rolling out practical agricultural skills through vocational training with a focus on job creation for women and youth". The project was carried out in partnership with Q-Point B.V., ECMA (Ethiopian Commercial Milk Producers Association), Gender2Connect and Alage College.
In June, we held the fourth and last training session. We were happy to be able to travel to Ethiopia this time to deliver the training in person. The topic of the session was “Dairy farming as a business.” It focused on capacity building in dairy farming skills and business development. The goal was to provide the trainees with the tools, skills and knowledge to run a commercially viable and income-generating dairy farm.
The final day of training was dedicated to the pitch event. Since the first training session, the participants had been working in six groups on a business plan. On this final day, they were able to pitch the plan to a panel of experts, including Meeuwes Brouwer, the Agricultural Councelor from the Dutch embassy, his agricultural advisor Mahlet Mekuria Dessie, and the dean of Alage College. The panel engaged enthusiastically, asking some insightful questions and providing valuable feedback.
Together with the participants, we look back on a successful event and training program. Indeed, several of the business plans showed such promise that they will most likely be continued!
