“Smart Agriculture” course students of Nanjing Luhe Secondary Vocational School in China receive one week tailored training

Nanjing, the modern capital of Jiangsu Province in eastern China, is renowned for its rich history, economic significance, and scientific contributions. With a population of about 9.4 million people, Nanjing is an important science center in China, hosting many universities, schools, and knowledge institutions. The economy is dominated by the service industry, followed by the financial, cultural, and tourism industries. It is also an important hub for agriculture and grain commerce.

Nanjing Luhe Secondary Vocational School (Nanjing Luhe SVS), located in the Luhe District, north of Nanjing in China, focusses on the strategic needs of the country's agricultural and rural modernization development. This institution serves about 4,000 students, providing secondary vocational education and housing on the school campus.

Among its offerings is the “Smart Agriculture” course, which bridges local agricultural needs with international development trends, addressing important issues such as food security, food safety, ecological security, human nutrition, and health. The course also promotes understanding and respecting the different cultures in the world, and the importance of actively participating in international exchanges and cooperation.

Nanjing Luhe SVS invited HollandDoor to contribute to the course by providing 25 students with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary perspective on smart agriculture. For a week, the program offered an interdisciplinary approach to smart agriculture, highlighting global and regional agricultural and horticultural developments, while contextualizing them within China’s local climatic and agricultural conditions. Key themes included plant physiology, plant health, and productivity. These lessons were brought to life through practical workshops and excursions, offering students a hands-on understanding of the course material.

Two special speeches also added depth to the week. One speech was at a farmers’ conference, entitled “Application technology of local biological organic fertilizer”. The other speech was delivered at a conference, entitled “Integration of industry with vocational education”. There was also a brainstorming session with teachers from the Agricultural Department of Nanjing Luhe SVS. These sessions facilitated knowledge exchange between Dutch and Chinese agricultural education approaches.

The week was a success, with students and staff from Nanjing Luhe SVS and HollandDoor trainer Niek Botden unanimously praising the training. The students were particularly impressed by the rich training content, illustrative videos and inspiring workshops.
