HollandDoor has successfully run a a study tour focused on Dairy Value Chain Management for 20 participants from the Lebanese Organization for Studies and Training (LOST). The programme, funded by RVO, took place in the Netherlands from 12 to 18 January, 2025. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the position of small-scale dairy farmers in Lebanon by enhancing expertise across the dairy production chain, from farm management to value chain optimization in the Baalbek-Hermel and North Bekaa regions, acknowledging the vital role of LOST in developing communities. The study tour in the Netherlands built on previous online trainings and aimed to provide practical, hands-on learning experiences to enhance the knowledge and skills of LOST staff and other advisors working in the field.
The programme focused on several key areas:
- Dairy Farm Management: Participants explored modern farm management practices, including data collection and record-keeping for improved cow health and welfare.
- Value Chain Optimization: The tour emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders, market developments, quality checks, and effective communication strategies to optimize the dairy value chain.
- Sustainable Practices: Participants were introduced to innovative approaches to sustainable dairy farming, including natural livestock farming and waste management solutions.
- Cooperative Development: The programme highlighted the benefits and formation of farmer cooperatives to improve their business and market position.
- Financial Management: Participants discussed strategies to improve the financial feasibility of processing plants and ensure long-term sustainability.
A crucial aspect of the study tour was the development of action plans by the participants. These plans are designed to implement the knowledge and best practices learned in the Lebanese context, ultimately contributing to the sustainable growth of the dairy sector and the empowerment of local communities.
This study tour signifies a step towards a long-term partnership between HollandDoor and LOST, with ongoing efforts to support the development of a commercially viable and sustainable dairy sector in Lebanon.
