Romanian cooperatives learn from best practices in Western European countries

The National Branch Union of Cooperatives in the Vegetable Sector (UNCSV) brings together the majority of cooperatives in Romania’s arable crops sector. These cooperatives are relatively young, and many still struggle with the ongoing challenges of the post-Soviet era when cooperatives did not have a positive reputation. To support its members in becoming business-oriented and market-driven organizations, UNCSV launched a project under the European Erasmus+ programme.

As one of the project partners, HollandDoor helped kick off the initiative in February 2025 with a week-long programme in Denmark, co-organized by Dalum Landbrugsskole.

Over 20 chairpersons, board members and operational staff from Romanian cooperatives producing crops such as cereals, oilseeds and potatoes participated in the programme. They explored the history and current practices of the Danish agrifood cooperative sector. The participants gained valuable insights into the fundamentals of cooperative operations, including governance, financial sustainability and strategies for attracting new members. Special emphasis was placed on marketing, branding and improving sales performance in both domestic and international markets.

HollandDoor will continue to be one of the driving forces in this project in the coming year. Follow-up sessions are planned in the Netherlands later this year and in Germany in early 2026, co-organized by Humboldt University in Berlin. These meetings will allow UNCSV and its member cooperatives to further deepen their understanding of these crucial topics.
