Twelve Egyptian researchers, advisors, teachers, and entrepreneurs visited the Netherlands in May 2022 to gather ideas about best practices and solutions in climate-smart agriculture (CSA). During the five-day program, the Egyptian delegates interacted with peers from the Aeres University of Applied Sciences in Dronten, the Farm of the Future (Wageningen University and Research), the Geling Potato company, Eurofins, Fruit Research Randwijk and Fruitconsult, De Groot en Slot, the Water Farmers Project in Anna Paulowna, HZPC, Koppert Biological Systems and Rijk Zwaan. The participants were eager to apply their newly gained knowledge in their home environment.
The study tour is part of a multi-year project on “climate-smart agriculture and modern water management.” It is funded by the Orange Knowledge Programme and managed by Nuffic, the Dutch organisation for internationalisation in education. HollandDoor is working with the Aeres University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands) and the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation in this project, as well as educational institutions in Egypt and various private sector companies in Egypt and the Netherlands. The project has been offering training and exposure sessions in Egypt since 2000 on topics such as (sub-)irrigation, drainage, sensor technology for optimizing crop cultivation, water reuse, water harvesting, adaptation and mitigation strategies to tackle the impact of droughts, salinization and extreme weather.
